Social Circle is the heart of what we do at For the Love of Play. These are small groups led by a behavioral therapist, educator or social worker that provide children with extra support in their social skills. Groups will work on a variety of social skills like initiating & maintaining peer relationships, flexibility, sharing & taking turns, expressing feelings, problem-solving and conflict-resolution strategies, respecting personal boundaries and building self-esteem.
The small class size with individualized instruction fosters confidence in friendships- like tutoring for social skills!
Social Circles are grouped by age and curated to the specific needs of the children involved. Intakes will be conducted with parents prior to the child joining a group to assess the child's current skills and areas of need. Groups will meet for 50 minutes once a week. Each week, parents will receive an email providing feedback and home practice recommendations. Groups will focus on building age-appropriate social skills through age-appropriate activities.
Each class will begin with a read-aloud that connects with a specific social topic of the week. Together we will explore the topic using art, dramatic play, music, and sensory materials. The focus for this age group will be initiating and maintaining friendships, flexibility with ideas, expressing feelings, and problem-solving.
Each week will have a social topic that relates to a friendship-building activity. Together we will explore the topic using board games, art, drama, and science projects. The focus for this age group will be maintaining friendships, conversation skills, impulsiveness, flexibility, expressing feelings, problem-solving, and setting/respecting personal boundaries.
Each week will have a specific social topic. The group will work together to discuss the topic and complete a related friendship-building activity. We will use board games, science projects, art and creative writing. After 5-6 weeks of meeting weekly, the group may go on small trips to facilitate their learning. These could include museums, parks, bowling alleys, or even coffee shops. The focus for this age group will be initiating and maintaining friendships, handling peer conflicts, resolution strategies, conversational skills, increasing self-esteem and navigating and navigating use of electronic communication.
